Of all the events that were cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, we are so grateful that our 2020 Addiction and Overdose Awareness Day memorial event was not one of them. International Overdose Awareness Day is commemorated on the last day of August each year, in memory of people who lost their lives to drugs. It's a day of remembrance for families who live with a painful loss every day. Last year, we were able to host a larger event with media to bring greater attention to this tragic loss of life. This year, we flew DJ, the star of the Flights Above Addiction program, from Santa Barbara to Stead Airport in Reno, Nevada where we were the graciously provided a hangar by the kind people of the Reno Air Races. The event was intimate and the families who attended were appreciative for the opportunity to share their stories of loss with others who truly walk in their shoes. It was a sad but beautiful event and our hearts were full. We are honored to carry the names of over 500 Americans who are victims of the drug epidemic on the wings of the plane and illuminate the fact that addiction can happen to anyone. Special thanks to Darcy Patterson, Mark Bailey and Snoopy for making the day possible.
Note: State and local health guidelines were followed during this private event.
